Free Money Exists If You Qualify
The government wants households to reduce carbon emissions and lower energy bills. To encourage uptake of efficient heating systems, they’re offering substantial grants. Understanding what’s available and whether you qualify could save you thousands of pounds.
Boiler Upgrade Scheme: £7,500 Available
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) provides £7,500 towards air source heat pump installations when you’re replacing oil, LPG, electric, or coal heating systems. This is not a loan, it’s a grant you don’t repay.
Key requirements: You must own the property. The installation must be MCS certified. You’re replacing a fossil fuel or electric heating system, not supplementing it. The property needs an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) with no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation.
What it covers: The grant applies to the heat pump equipment and installation costs. It doesn’t cover radiator upgrades, hot water cylinder replacement, or electrical work though these might be necessary for optimal performance.
Who Qualifies for BUS
Homeowners replacing oil, LPG, electric storage heaters, or coal heating qualify. If you currently have gas central heating, you don’t qualify under current rules. Properties off the gas grid benefit most from this scheme.
The property must be in England or Wales. Scotland has separate schemes. The installation must meet minimum efficiency standards, most modern heat pumps exceed these easily.
Applications are processed through MCS certified installers (like Pure Temp). We handle the paperwork, submit applications, and ensure your installation meets all requirements. The grant money goes directly to us, reducing your installation cost by £7,500.
ECO4 Scheme: For Lower Income Households
The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) provides funding for energy efficiency improvements including heat pumps and insulation. Unlike BUS, ECO4 is means-tested.
You might qualify if you receive certain benefits (Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Child Tax Credits, etc.) or have household income below £31,000. ECO4 can cover significant portions of installation costs, sometimes the entire amount.
Eligibility is complex and varies by circumstance. Energy suppliers administer ECO4 funding, and each has different criteria. We can check your eligibility and connect you with appropriate suppliers during consultation.
Local Authority Schemes
Some local councils offer additional grants or interest-free loans for energy efficiency improvements. These vary significantly by location and change frequently.
Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, and Lincolnshire councils occasionally run targeted schemes. It’s worth checking your local authority website or asking during our consultation, we track available local funding for our coverage area.
0% Finance Options
Even without grants, spreading costs makes heat pump and air conditioning installations affordable. We offer 0% finance on installations over £3,000, with terms up to 10 years available.
No deposit required. Quick online approval. Fixed monthly payments. This makes premium climate control accessible without upfront capital, particularly when combined with energy bill savings that partially offset monthly payments.
What About Air Conditioning?
Standard air conditioning installations don’t currently qualify for BUS grants, the scheme specifically targets renewable heating systems. However, air conditioning units with heat pump functionality do qualify if you’re replacing eligible heating systems and using them as your primary heating source.
This is a nuance worth exploring. Modern air conditioning provides efficient heating, potentially qualifying you for grant funding while also delivering cooling capability. We’ll assess whether your installation approach meets grant criteria during consultation.
How to Claim
Don’t apply yourself, work through MCS certified installers. We handle BUS applications as part of our service. After our initial consultation and system design, we submit your application, install your system to MCS standards, and ensure all documentation is completed correctly.
The grant reduces your invoice directly. You pay the installation cost minus £7,500. Simple, straightforward, and handled entirely by our team.
Combining Grants with Savings
Heat pump installations with BUS grants often cost £4,000-8,000 after the £7,500 reduction. Annual energy savings of £600-1,200 mean payback periods of 4-7 years. After that, you’re simply enjoying lower bills and superior comfort for the system’s 20+ year lifespan.
Even better: energy prices historically increase. Your savings grow over time while your installation cost is fixed. It’s an investment in long-term comfort and financial predictability.
Act Soon
Grant schemes don’t last forever. BUS currently runs until 2028 but funding is limited. When the annual budget exhausts, applications pause until the next financial year. We’ve seen demand surge in spring when people start thinking about summer cooling and winter heating.
If you’re considering heat pump installation and might qualify for grants, start the conversation now. Initial consultations are free, we’ll check your eligibility, and you’ll know exactly what funding you can access before making any commitment.
